What the surface can tell you

Natural leather can show variations in grain, texture and tone. These differences can be part of its character, but appearance alone cannot establish the grade, tanning method or origin of a hide. Those details should come from the information supplied for the specific piece.

Look beyond a photograph

Lighting and finishing affect how a surface appears. Where possible, examine a piece in ordinary light and consider its flexibility, seams and edges as well as its grain. A smooth surface and a pronounced grain describe different appearances; neither is a complete measure of quality on its own.

Let care follow the material

Finishes respond differently to moisture, oils and cleaning products. Follow the care instructions for the item rather than assuming that a treatment suitable for one leather will suit another. If the finish or treatment is unclear, ask for guidance before applying a product.
